The Best Local Festivals/Carnivals Around Frederick

One thing's for sure: Frederick knows how to throw a party. Held in September, The Great Frederick Fair (pictured above) is perhaps the county's biggest event, and clearly the favorite, according to locals who voted it tops in Best of the Best. It showcases the region's agricultural heritage, complete with live entertainment and mouthwatering fair treats -- so mouthwatering, in fact, some locals attend with the mission of eating their way through the fairgrounds, where the candy floss is as sweet as the memories made. Then, as leaves turn fiery red and gold, artisans from all over the country converge at Catoctin Colorfest in Thurmont, displaying their crafts against the stunning backdrop of autumn foliage. And just when you think the year's magic has dimmed, Sailing Through the Winter Solstice opens in November, as 26 sailing boats and four land-locked boats illuminate Carroll Creek in downtown Frederick.
